Medication Administration Classes
Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) require certification to administer most medications and treatments to ensure safe, accurate medication and treatment administration.

Medication Administration classes are taught by a DODD-certified Registered Nurse (RN) Trainer using DODD-approved curriculum.
​
All certifications require an annual renewal to continue administering medications and treatment as approved by DODD.

CERTIFICATION 1
Classes are available to all certified independent providers and certified provider direct service staff. Certification 1 covers Initial Medication Administration and Health Related Activities. Per the Department of Developmental Disabilities, this certification allows personnel to administer oral, topical, and inhaled medications, as well as provide 13 health-related activities if they have been prescribed for an individual. Once certification is earned, it must be renewed annually.
CERTIFICATION 2
To be eligible for this class, you must have a current Certification 1 and be a certified independent providers and certified provider direct service staff. Certification 2 covers Feeding via G-tube or J-tube. Per the Department of Developmental Disabilities, this certification allows personnel to administer medications through a Gastrostomy or Jejunostomy (G/J) tube if the DSP has been delegated to do so by a nurse. Once certification is earned, it must be renewed annually.
CERTIFICATION 3
To be eligible for this class, you must have a current Certification 1 and be a certified independent providers and certified provider direct service staff. Certification 3 covers Insulin administration. Per the Department of Developmental Disabilities, this certification allows allows personnel to administer insulin and injectable treatments for metabolic glycemic disorders if the DSP has been delegated to do so by a nurse. Once certification is earned, it must be renewed annually.
ONI Class Policies
Class Participation Requirements
To be eligible to participate in the course and be eligible for certification, participants must meet the following requirements:

Be employed by a certified DD Agency or be a certified DODD Independent Provider.

Be at least 18 years old.

Have obtained a High School Diploma or GED.

Have the ability to read, write and understand English at a level that is sufficient to pass the course.

Meets the criteria for background and registry checks in compliance with OAC 5123:2-2-02.

This application is submitted by certified DD Agency or certified DODD Independent Provider (IP’s will submit application along with High School Diploma/GED documentation), which will be verified by the RN Trainer.

If the class is a re-certification for Category 1, have a Category 1 certification or be within the 60 day expiration requirement (see Certification Expiration below).

If the class is a Category 2-3, have a Category 1 certification in good-standing.

Class Materials
ONI cares about the environment. There will be limited copies of the curriculum for use during class that are to be returned at the end of the class. Electronic copies are available on DODD's website for each class.

Virtual Learning
In order to provide remote or blended trainings, ONI complies with guidance set forth by DODD. As such, students are expected to:

be visible at all times

see the trainer, materials, and demonstrations

see and hear one another
-
complete skills checks and evaluations to receive certifications

Certificates
Certificates are emailed to the email provided on the registration to individuals/provider agencies/independent providers following the completion of the training, evaluation, and skills check by the RN Trainer. Please allow for approximately 7 business days following completion for delivery.

Certification Expiration
If an individual's medication administration certification is 60 days past the expiration, the individual cannot take a renewal class and administer medications or perform health related activities until the certification is current. If a certification is 60 days past the expiration, individuals will be required to take the Initial Certification 1 again, as well as any additional initial certification classes that are needed.

Class Cancellation
If the class needs to be cancelled by the instructor, you will be contacted based on the contact information provided on your application. A notification will be sent via email regarding class make-up dates.

Request to Cancel or Transfer Registration
If you need to cancel or change your reservation, please contact us at 740-507-5384. You cannot send someone else in another individual's place without receiving approval from the instructor and updated registration information. Any changes or cancellations must be requested to the instructor two (2) business days before the start of the class. A request for changes or cancellation does not in itself indicate approval of the change or cancellation. You will need to receive a response from the instructor with agreed upon changes.
Refunds will not be provided to those who do not follow the above policy.

Incomplete Registration
If a registration is incomplete, a seat will not be saved and the individual will not be permitted to attend the training.

Late Arrivals
ONI reserves the right to deny entrance to participants who arrive late. Refunds will not be provided to those who are late and not accepted into the class.

Cheating
Participants presumed cheating will automatically fail the training and the class fee will not be refunded.
​
Disruptions
Participants may be asked to leave a class if the RN Trainer feels they are disrupting or hindering the learning environment. If this occurs, the agency/independent provider will be notified and the class fee will not be refunded.
